More Wren obsession

The little guy was at it again so I took more shots of him singing on the wire. Pretty good detail in these.

Wren music

Carolina Wren are little birds with hyperactive metabolisms and remarkably large voices. They are frequently much louder than birds twice their size. The little male pictured here was making such a racket marking territory and trying to attract a mate, that I had to go outside to look for him. Even with that moth in his moth, he was singing. One shot up on the power line actually catches him in mid song. Check it out.

Not so secret Squirrel

When I turned around from shooting the wren, this guy was 10 feet away, sitting perfectly still. just barely caught my eye, he blends in so well.

Mocker Fledge and Baby Owls

Here's a shot of a mocker fledge I took in the back yard this weekend.

Also, the owlets have hatched! Three out of four anyway. Check out Chris' owlcam.

Wrens are LOUD

So loud that I heard them calling while I was typing the last blog entry. So I went out with my camera, stood patiently listening to the constant calling and got these shots.

Caterpillars are in good supply now. See the shot of the juicy green one in the sunflower leaf below. Got a lot of hungry mouths to feed.

Hummers back, Breeding season in high gear

Sorry folks. No new bird pix for you. I tried to get a few shots of the cardinals as they were fighting over mates this last week, but the pix were low quality. The wrens are also very active right now, but won't stand still for a shot. Saw a Mississippi Kite over head but didn't have time for a shot. A breeding pair of hummers showed up at my feeder Wednesday, the 18th and have been by daily for meals. They fly off before I can get a shot.

Saw a tiny bird flitting about a tree and thought it too small to be a wren, but never got a clear enough look to find out. Moved about like a wren, so maybe that's what it was. I'll keep trying.

Owl box!

No. Not mine. Not even in my neighborhood. But good friends of mine that live over in Allendale have a neighbor with a fancy nest box that has tiny monochrome cameras that work day and night. Eastern Screech owls are incubating 4 eggs in there. Not hatched yet, so check it out. Plus, Chris (the proprietor) has a link to nest box sites hosted by the Cornell Ornithology department, so you can check out many other kinds of nest boxes. Here's the link. Check it out.
